St. Anthony Statues Personify A Great Man

St. Anthony was a great scholar and excellent orator. He was born in 1195 in Lisbon, Portugal, Fernando Martins de Belhoes. He entered a St. Augustinian Abby when he was 15 years old after studying Latin and the bible. His family was wealthy and his parents were not in favor of him becoming a monk, but he wanted nothing more than a secluded life. His family continuously visited him and tried to talk him into coming home but he was determined to live a life like Jesus. He decided to move on and traveled around a bit but finally went to Italy. As a result of his intense meditation on Jesus, he had a vision of baby Jesus. To this day any St. Anthony statue shows him holding a child.

In Italy he met St. Francis of Assisi and joined his Franciscan order in 1220. It was unusual for a Franciscan, who vowed to live a life of poverty, to be such a learned person and St. Francis warned him not to develop pride in learning. He also told St. Anthony not to let his students develop pride. He became the most famous direct disciple of St. Francis. No one forgot that he was a child of Portugal and is considered that countries patron saint. There is a St. Anthony statue in the Church of Saint Roch in Lisbon which is one of the first Jesuit churches and a tribute to his learning.

St. Anthony died young at 36 and one year later, Pope Gregory IX, canonized him. He is the patron saint for travelers and sailors who wear his medal and pray to a St. Anthony statue for protection while traveling. People also pray to him when they have lost something or want something returned to them. He was famous for finding things and bringing them back and even in this lifetime people approached him for help.

Portugal had a stronghold in Goa, India during the 17th and 18th centuries. There is still a famous St. Anthony statue there. A nobleman who was blind was being carried through some stormy weather. They stopped for rest near a statue of St. Anthony that was small and getting rained on. At that time, the blind man prayed to the saint to restore his sight and if that happened, he would build a chapel where a large statue would reside out of the weather. His sight was restored and the chapel and statue can be seen today.

There is a St. Anthony statue to suit any home or church. They can be found less than one foot tall and life sized. They are made of bronze, stone, plaster, polymer, fiberglass and pewter. The Fontanini family makes beautiful life-like religious statues in Tuscany, Italy and has been doing it for four generations. St. Anthony was a humble man, devoted to Jesus and loved by the people around him because he spoke so well to them. His learning complimented his simple life; it did not distract him from it.
