Our Lady of Lourdes

Bernadette Soubirous was only 14-years old when she first admitted to seeing apparitions of a “lady” in the cave of Massabielle.  This was on February 11, 1858.  About a mile outside of the town of Lourdes, the peasant girl was gathering firewood with her sister, Toinette, and a friend, Jeanne Abadie, when she saw the ghostly figure.  This was the first of seventeen pronounced sightings that took place over the course of the year.  This vision has been called “Our Lady of Lourdes ,” and many Catholics believe her visage to be that of the Virgin Mary. You can buy a religious medal or statue in remembrance of this story.

The rest of the story of Our Lady of Lourdes tells of the three girls venturing into out in order to collect not only firewood but also bones in order to buy some bread.  Bernadette Soubirous took off her shoes and stockings so she could wade through the water near the grotto and cave of Massabielle.  When she did this, she heard two gusts of wind but noticed no movement in the trees and plant life.  She also noticed a light in the grotto and a small girl dressed completely in white except for a blue belt and a golden yellow rosary that seemed to correspond to roses on the girl’s feet. Saint medals are a great way to tell a story from our history.

Bernadette wanted to keep her sighting of a secret, but her sister, Toinette, told their mother.  After this, the girls received corporal punishment for telling their outrageous story.  In spite of this, Bernadette returned to the Grotto, three days later, but this time with three different girls.  She also brought some holy water to test the spirits nature.  To her surprise the apparition welcomed the shower of holy water and asked her to return over the next two weeks.

Over time she developed detractors, but she also had followers.  One significant moment was once, when the apparition told the girl to dig and drink the water from the spring she would find.  Of course, she was discouraged, but when she did this, she found a clean, clear pool of water.  Our Lady of Lourdes had performed a miracle.  There were many other documented miracles.  While many were true and certified, some were also determined to be hoaxes which lead church officials to investigate the claims further. A religious statue of  Our Lady of Lourdes is perfect for any garden.

Because of her visions and miraculous personal experiences, Bernadette Soubirous was canonized as a saint.  Her original Our Lady of Lourdes claim was finally recognized on January 18, 1860.  Evidence such as Bernadette’s ecstasy of April 7, 1859 was cause for this change of heart.  On this day, a medical examiner observed that she held her hands over a lit candle without receiving any burns.  The last time she visited the Grotto, on July 16th of the same year, she admitted that she had never before seen this female apparition so beautifully.  Because of all of this, the Marian veneration in Lourdes was established, which is one of the most visited Marian shrines in the world, welcoming 4 to 6 million pilgrims every year. This is a powerful religious statue or shrine as it is called for all eyes to behold.
