The Patron saints medals are very popular amongst the Catholic followers. The medal of a particular saint characterizes his or her virtues. By wearing the medals, the followers want to imbibe those virtues in themselves. Patron saint meals were introduced to honor Christian martyrs and the preachers who had laid down their lives in spreading the Christian preaching’s.

The practice was first followed by the Greeks and the Romans. Slowly they were adopted by the Christians. The saints are also related to particular profession and people of that profession wear medals of the respective saints. Medals express our faith and devotion, for holy souls, who have walked the righteous path and made sacrifices for the betterment of the mankind. Saints are holy souls and hence are assumed to be closer to god and good medium to receive god’s blessing.

The medals are usually worn as pendants on necklaces or chains. Medals are sometimes laid on the foundation of the building or on the walls to protect it from evil. Some medals are used in business places to increase,   prosperity.

The Patron saint medals have the picture of the saint on them with inscription like “pray for us”. The medals are made from gold, silver or bronze. There are many saint medals, but few of important of them are used widely like the St. James, St. Peter, St. Benedict, St. Mathew, etc.

Saint Benedict medal protects the wearer from evil and in temptation against the purity. I t procures help in hour of the death and wards of contagious diseases. Protects in tempest and storms. The St. James medal protects the wearer from arthritis and is patron of druggist, laborers, soldiers, pilgrims and equestrians. St. Joan of Arc is patron of rape victims, martyrs, soldiers, women army corps and prisoners. St. Peter is patron of the bakers, fisherman, locksmiths, masons, popes and protects against foot diseases. Thus people from different walks of life and profession wear different types of Saint Medals to protect themselves from evil and bring peace in life. The proximity of saints in form of the medals provides a link with holy and divine powers of souls who have worked tirelessly for betterment of the mankind and in process made sacrifices. The medals also encourage us to tread a righteous path and try to achieve purity in our lives as, achieved by these great saints, in spite of humble beginnings.
